Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
by Dai Sijie
funny
lighthearted
fast-paced
Good yarn of rural, romantic re-education in Maoist Szechuan province. Romantic because the main characters are young. The hardships are transmuted. Sort of delightfully uneven. It aims for entertainment more than long-lasting impact or truth. Some nice images, like our hero inscribing a passage of Balzac on the inside of his rank sheepskin coat.
