Love Is the Drug by Alaya Dawn Johnson
4.0

This book turned out to be very interesting, if at times a little confusing. But in the end I didn't completely mind the confusion; for me it kept things interesting, kept me on my toes as a reader while I tried to figure out what exactly was going on with Bird. Even though I kind of figured out the twist pretty early on, I could understand Bird not figuring it out because obviously she's in the story and doesn't know how these bio-terror plots tend to pan out and also she's not nearly as cynical as I am.
I thought the diversity was excellent, especially given the intricacies of the prep school setting and the tightrope Bird had to walk due to her mother's and society's expectations of her. And when Bird decided to start breaking away from all of those expectations it was even more excellent.
And even though the end was a little bit too nicely tied up so as to almost feel a smidge trite (to me at least), it still made me smile to see how things worked out. All in all, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes some intrigue and disaster but wants something a little closer to home than most dystopias around now.
