The Willows
by Algernon Blackwood
Cosmic horror, made worse by the natural and semi-ordinary setting. To me, the scariest horror tales are told about events or things that are common in my reality. Turning trees into objects of terror... effective! This novella shows a masterful control of mood. Suspense and fear, just enough to be constant and growing. Rather like blowing a bubble: a large amount of suspense is built only by slow and steady breath. To blow too hard results in destruction of the mood rather than a faster expansion.
