What About Men? by Caitlin Moran

4.0

Moran has been on my radar for some years, known for being a hilarious feminist commenter on social issues. Her focus previously was on women and girls, but she was asked again and again "What about men?" How can we help them with their problems, especially young men and boys? From there, she embarks on a journey asking men about their experiences and problems.

Unfortunately, her pool of men was quite limited, largely to hetero white in her age group (Gen X). I found the anecdotes pretty enlightening, but I wish the book was a bit wider in scope. Moran shines a light on how expectations of masculinity has really limited men and their relationships. She is very empathetic and sees the humor in so many things. Some parts of it had me rolling. Moran's commentary can be so hilarious!

Moran does a wonderful job introducing subjects we might not have previously been aware of. I just wanted more. How do we address the issues and hardline expectations boys and men face? I was also a bit unsure who her audience is. As a 41 year old woman with a young son, it seemed like I was her target audience. Men and boys may be less inclined to read this. Overall, a thought-provoking read with warmth and humor.
