Buried Deep and Other Stories by Naomi Novik
5.0
I'm a big fan of Naomi Novik, having anywhere from enjoyed to wholeheartedly life-changingly adored everything of hers I've read, so I was looking forward to this collection, and especially revisiting the worlds of a couple of her series.
I really enjoyed the Scholomance story, "After Hours". "Seven Years from Home" sent me reeling; I could write a paper on it I'm sure. There was so much going on. (Just casually "I was holding her hand" at one point?????? "My SISTERS"? No not the ones I mentioned at the beginning. Ruth, girl, you are SKATING OVER SOME THINGS THAT SEEM EXTREMELY A BIG DEAL!) It could easily be expanded into a novel if the author were so inclined. And "Dragons & Decorum" is perfect, just pure 😘👌
In decades past I had zero appetite for short stories at all. I don't mind them as much as I used to, but man they really pack a punch. A collection like this is almost too intense a reading experience for me, but so worth it.
