What a delightful read! I read this as a standalone and at no time was I lost or confused. The author does a good job of providing enough background info on the first book while letting the reader infer other info to keep the plot moving forward while not being confusing.
The characters were great. I loved the found family vibes and the character development, especially on Violet and Hawthorn’s part. And the spice was well done and very sensual. I wasn’t expecting it to be as spicy as it was. The worldbuilding and magic system are fascinating. I wouldn’t have minded a little more there, but that’s on me for skipping the 1st book.
Some parts were absolutely bonkers, but in the best possible way. Our motley crew tears around a ship for 6 days, breaking into staterooms, unleashing animals, trying to solve a murder and find a piece of the Last Contract. A séance is involved. There’s a reporter-turned-jewel thief and a collection of Victorian pornography. I don’t know what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised at every turn.
The half a point off is because I felt a few parts near the end were a bit rushed or jarring. Maybe it’s on me for missing something, but it felt like we were dropped into the whole séance ruse with no buildup whatsoever. But like I said, that could have been me.
An entertaining read and delightful surprise. Highly recommend.
