Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All
by Laura Ruby
This book really could have been a contender. Unfortunately, I think it tried to be too many things to too many people and missed the mark.
Pros: Stunning writing, poignant lines, believable characters, a few very touching scenes.
Cons: Weak setting description (I really love how historical fiction is able to capture the essence of an era and this one just didn't do it), vague plot movement (I'm an avid reader and found myself really confused as to what in the world was going on), hard to follow dialogue (especially when the ghosts were talking!).
Overall, I'm giving it 3 stars because I'm sure I have a student or two who is going to love it, but it just didn't do it for me.
