The Awakening
by Kate Chopin
I started out listening to The Awakening as an audiobook, but got impatient with the narration around chapter twenty-five and managed to find a Project Gutenberg version online in order to finish it.
I think it's an interesting, even important, story when taken in context of when it was written (1899) in regard to women's societal roles. It's a book that is often included in college and 'must read' lists. There's certainly a lot of content to discuss and debate.
I found Edna, the main character, to be selfish, adolescent in her so-called love of Robert, childish in response to her husband's wishes, and irredeemable in her responsibilities toward her children; but - and it's a big but - it is from my very 21st century point of view. Maybe we've moved beyond such rigid expectations of women (I hope so) and that's why I found it hard to relate to her. But I suppose it's not a bad thing to have a reminder of the past.
And so, I've given this 3 stars; an interesting story, reasonably well-written with a polarizing main character.
