Lips Touch: Three Times
by Laini Taylor
I am in complete awe of Laini Taylor's near-supernatural abilities as a writer. In just three short stories about demons and kissing, she makes me understand the incredible complexity of divine intervention. She ANSWERS that life-long question about why bad things happen to good people, and she does it with such grace that the complexity of it settles immediately into your mind and takes up residence as FACT. I adore, in each story, how she shows that destruction is as much a part of love as joy.
Each world and set of characters she builds in this set of stories is completely unforgettable. I laughed so many times in the first chapter, about the tick-ridden goats and the unapologetic smoking and the embarrassing relatives, always slaughtering animals at inopportune times. Then I shivered at the Druj and their chilling culture. And I reveled in the exotic-smelling culture of British-occupied India and its accompanying tale of souls traded and bartered.
An absolutely stunning collection of writing. I have no idea why it took me so long to read it.
