This is my second attempt reading this book, and it was a lot easier than last time. I started reading this book after a friend recommended it to me. In my first reading, the writing felt too much like how a fanfiction would be written. It turned me off so I really found it hard to get even halfway done. This time, it didn't seem so apparent and I finally managed to finish it.

While reading this book, I heard that Cassandra Clare had written a Harry Potter fanfiction that had a similar concept with this book prior to publication. Naturally, I just found myself comparing the characters in this book to Harry Potter characters. I'm not going to say which characters are which, but if you're familiar with the Harry Potter series it's probably clear though some are a mix of characters. The plots are pretty similar too. Bad guy creates a cult-like group in order to eradicate the world of those whose blood isn't pure. Sounds like an event that happened in history too, but Harry Potter is probably based on it too.

The writing wasn't too bad, but it did get a little tiring after a while. I really liked the writing in the chapter where Luke tells his story better and I wish Cassandra Clare wrote the book more similar to that style. She also tends to add unnecessary descriptions sometimes and it would catch me off guard and ruin the flow of the story. I liked most of the characters. Clary started to get annoying after a while though. But I really did not like Jace. I wanted to just punch him in the face for most of the story. He was just too sarcastic and arrogant and seemed like he was trying too hard to seem aloof. I hope he changes in the later books because if not, we'll have to meet in an alleyway and square off. I don't even care that he's a Shadowhunter and would be able to beat me up in a heartbeat.

All in all, the book wasn't too bad. It was enough to make me want to read the rest of the series, plus I'm looking forward to Magnus and Alec and Raphael.
