A Rare Benedictine by Ellis Peters

4.0

A Rare Benedictine by Ellis Peters is my final read in the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael. I read the hardcover version, which is 118 pages and has some wonderful illustrations by Bascove.

This book contains three short story prequels to the Brother Cadfael books; all of the other books in this series are full-length novels. The first short story, "A Light on the Road to Woodstock," tells the story of how Cadfael eventually made his way to Shrewsbury Abbey. The second, "The Price of Light," is the most satisfying short story mystery of the bunch. The third, "Eye Witness," was full of wit and a pleasure to read.

If you're a fan of historical fiction that includes mysteries, I would highly recommend this series. I read this short story collection after I read all of the novels, but you can also read it before you start the rest of the series, if you'd like to go in chronological order.
