Bayou Magic by Jewell Parker Rhodes
4.0
This was heavier than I expected, and tackled a lot of hard topics, slavery, death of a parent, multiple animal deaths, child abuse, alcoholism, etc. there was hope and positivity shown alongside these, but definitely one to consider prereading for sensitive children.
There was little magic and mermaids, and it was cool to see mermaid lore that is different from what I’m used to - we read the section on Mama Wata from Mermaid Atlas alongside this.
