The Magic Mountain
by Thomas Mann
1000 pages about the privileged rich idling in a tuberculosis sanatorium. Pontifications about any random matter - be it about opera, skiing, tree bark, molecular structure of snowflakes, philosophy, women … while the characters still remain relatively dull and implausible. According to Th.Mann himself, this book is “not suitable for the masses”. How considerate.
He recommends to read it for the second time as well (if you have managed to struggle through the first reading). Er … no thank you
