Tisaanah has worked her worked very hard to achieve her goal of getting enough money to buy her freedom from her master. When she finally does she is shocked to learn he had no intention of ever letting her go. As he is in the process of beating her to death, she loses control of her power and kills him. She flees the city and goes to another city that she thinks will help her.

Upon arrival they agree to help her on one condition. She must train with Max and pass the exams that all of their kind must pass. Most get their whole lives to accomplish what she has a few months for.

Max does not want to train her. He has spent most of his life trying to not be part of society. He has no intentions of rejoing the military, but as he works with Tisaanah he finds that he can't let her go.

Definitely a slow burn on the romance. It's more fantasy with romance in the background. Love seeint how strong Tisaanah is after the horrors that she faced as a slave.
