Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe

dark informative medium-paced

4.0

I had an inkling of the Sacklers and their business but I had no idea just how... evil the whole thing is. There's really no other word I could come up with than evil. It's the blatant denial of any wrong doing in the face of cold hard facts. Almost like the more money they made standing on the bodies of those who died from their drugs, the less human they become.

'Empire of Pain' packs some serious information that everyone should read or listen. But I have to admit, I really didn't care about the VERY thorough chronicle about the lives of the three Sackler brothers. So the whole first part of the book was pretty boring and I sincerely hope that it wouldn't have turned potential readers away cos they couldn't get through it.

Other than that, the rest of the book was fascinating and shocking and batshit. Just how fast it all spread and how devastating the damage was, and still is and will still be for decades to come. I don't doubt how much help this drug is to those who really need them like cancer patients but the aggressive marketing to those who don't need it, that's just pure greed.
