kraley 's review for:
The Name of the Rose
by Umberto Eco
I read one reviewer who said reading this book was like doing a really difficult hike, but where the view is worth it at the end. I feel like I do after a hike. Wow, that is an amazing view. I can’t believe I actually walked that far up! The first third of the book is fairly difficult reading. There is a lot of Latin mixed in also. I finally started to listen to the book instead and found my understanding to be greatly increased because now the Latin sounded Spanish and I could at least get the gist of what was being quoted. The author isn’t one who bent to translate for you. There is a lot of interesting historical debate centered on the different branches of Catholicism at the time. The mystery itself was ok, but the labyrinth library was a cool creation. I recommend looking up a map after you get to that part, but not before so you can discover as Adso does. I know there were many things that I missed in this book by not being Catholic, not speaking Latin and not having a terrific historical background for this time. I still enjoyed it and felt like it provoked thought. I am not sure if I would read it again though.
