as always from octavia butler, vivid characters and scenes and a very compelling story. one of the most realistic near-future dystopias i have ever read - terrifying!!! i think octavia butler too has an uncanny ability to write about exactly how a group of people, or pair of people, conflict and the interpersonal issues theyd have with each other when forced into groups by necessity. so so good.

also such a good portrayal of grooming and black women (girls, really) being forced into leadership roles & that tying into these predatory relationships … the way its written its really not spoonfed and just like in the real world so easy to overlook especially with how lauren mostly /likes/ this older guy and the readers seee his creepiness and how he is dating her to shape her into whatever he wants or whatever. ew!
