Cilka's Journey by Heather Morris
4.0

Much preferred the first book, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, over this book, though that may be my preference of nonfiction.

Midway through the book, I found it harder to suspend disbelief, finding Cilka’s reaction to certain situations bravely (or pretending bravery, which felt very real and human), and indiscriminately meek at others. There didn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason why she would react one way vs the other, but towards the end of the story she (or the author) finds herself again. Still an enjoyable read, and it was nice to revisit characters from Tattooist, as well as see Cilka’s view on shared events.

I added a star for the author’s note, and related essay at the end of the book that flesh out more of the history of the gulags, which is at the center of this novel.
