The Explorer
by Katherine Rundell
Although this book is pitched for the middle grade reader, as an avid adult reader, I throughly enjoyed it.
Four children survive a plane crash in the Amazon Rainforest, and overcome physical danger, as well as emotional obstacles, on their quest to reach safety.
The Explorer is a brilliantly crafted tale, with an engaging pace which made it impossible to put down. All of the characters are well rounded and realistic, with fully realised personalities, something which is rarely done well for child characters.
The adversities they face are laced with true peril, and the novel is skilfully woven with profound moments which are relatable for readers of any age.
“You don’t have to be in a jungle to be an explorer [...] Every human on this earth is an explorer. Exploring is nothing kore than the paying of attention, writ large. Attention. That’s what the world asks of you. If you pay ferocious attention to the world, you will be as safe as it is possible to be.”
