The Girls Who Disappeared
by Claire Douglas
medium-paced
The Devil's Corridor, a road in rural Wilshire known for strange occurrences, holds the unsolved mystery of Olivia Rutherford, the sole survivor of a car crash twenty years prior where her three friends vanished. Jenna, a journalist, arrives to cover the cold case and is met with hostility from the locals, and increasingly intense threats that warn her to leave before she uncovers the truth.
A solid concept with a clunky execution. I love a decades old mystery involving people who seemingly vanish completely. Where this one lost me was the very confusing non-linear timeline. Don't get me wrong, non-linear timelines are something that I often really enjoy when done well, but this one was way too complicated because we, as the reader, were given no context as to if they were flashbacks or if they were happening simultaneously with the modern day story line. The characters in these chapters were never properly explained or introduced, so I felt SO CONFUSED when those chapters showed up intermittently. However, I did enjoy trying to decipher if there was a supernatural occurrence or just human evil responsible for the missing girls. I also liked how it ended, and once the two POVs were brought together, I did appreciate how they were connected. Unfortunately it took way too long for me to feel invested because I was lost, and therefore had a hard time connecting with it caring about the characters.
