The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson

3.0

Eva Ibbotson has this incredible way of writing where the whole story has this fantastical sense of magic and wonderment underlining it, which really brings the story and characters to life. Her stories for children are like that, (jewels! journeys! exotic locations!) and so is the Secret Countess which is the first YA book by her I've read.

It's set right after the Russian Revolution and along with all the historical stuff there's all this detail about the characters, which is humorous and enjoyable to read. However, I do think the plot was lacking and could've been a more eventful. Nevertheless, it makes up for this with its settings, descriptions and characters, as both Anna and Rupert are likeable and interesting (and very shippable) and the supporting characters are memorable in their own ways. It's a fun little historical story and it's definitely made me interested in Ibbotson's other YA novels.
