How Not to Disappear by Clare Furniss

5.0

I'm starting to really love the "road trip" trope in literature. I can't say exactly why, but it's just kind of something I've always wanted for myself and I really like these as coming of age stories. I don't know why, but there's just something about a kid who just graduated high school going out on a self-discovery journey that's really important to me.

So basically, this was the classic road trip story that I love so much, but with a twist. Instead of a group of friends going on a trip and meeting other friends, it's a girl with a great-aunt that nobody in her family even knew about. Hattie, the teenager, is dealing with her own pregnancy, and she uncovers the story about her great-aunt Gloria's pregnancy that will change her life and come to mean so much about her and her family. This story is not about teenage angst, it is about family. And I'm really glad it jumped out to me from the shelf of the school library on my second Thursday of my junior year of high school.
