Bad Kids by Zijin Chen

4***

My favorite kind of completely un-put-downable, edge of your seat, having you guess until the absolute final page suspense novel! This book is witty, funny, intriguing, unique, bizarre, and hair-raisingly eerie. I don’t believe I have EVER read a whodunit like this, and even though the crimes are patently obvious, you will absolutely be glued to your seat wondering…what the heck???

Murders, blackmailing, framing - and somehow, friendship - abound when three young Chinese children, two of whom are orphans, accidentally record a murderer kill his in-laws, and then the game’s afoot to escape the brilliant detective on the case.

Too, the moral dilemmas are so infuriatingly gray that while you think you know what should be done, your sympathetic heartstrings will tear you apart.

The writing style took a bit to get used to because it’s very clipped and sparse, sometimes even a bit cringeworthy (perhaps a translation issue?), hence the 4*. Yet once you get past that, it flows so smoothly and quickly that you will read this in a couple of sittings. I envy you, dear reader, for getting to enjoy this for the first time!
