The Battle of Life by Charles Dickens

3.0

This is yet another Christmas Book from the Vintage Classics Dickens at Christmas.

I'm really confused with this one. When reading the story, I really enjoyed it. The writing was just so beautiful, especially the opening. It was typical Dickensian writing - a lot of detail, but beautifully described. I found this ran throughout the story; every time a new passage/chapter began, it started with the most beautiful setting and description. This is something I really like about Dickens.

Additionally, I really liked reading the story. Upon reflection, the actual plot is a little strange and random, and I didn't take all that much from it. But that didn't stop my enjoyment. All the characters were interesting and different, and I didn't find myself getting bored by them. I wasn't bored by the narrative either. However, I can't bring myself to rate it higher than 3 stars. Why? I don't know. It was good; the best Christmas Book I've read from this collection so far (excluding The Christmas Carol because I've already read it, so skipped it). But it didn't blow me away. It was average, I guess you could say.

Again, this didn't feel like a Christmas story to me? I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't strictly read it at this time of year.
