The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

5.0

I bought this after it won The Nation's Favourite Book Award. I'm not normally one to trust the tastes of the British book-reading public but in this instance I did and boy am I glad about it. This book is an epic and I don't just mean because it's so large it could be used as a doorstop. I thought all the characters melded together perfectly, the writing was good and detailed but not overly so, but the best thing I thought was the story. It dragged me in and kept me hooked for the whole 1076 pages. I thought the female characters were especially strong for a male writer. It was a little bit graphic in places, there were several rape scenes but it didn't feel gratuitous at all, but relevant to the story. I will probably read the sequel, I liked it that much.
