Bring Me Your Midnight by Rachel Griffin

4.0

Rachel Griffin writes my absolute favorite witchy stories! For three years, I’ve got to enjoy a new book from her every autumn and it’s such a blessing. Nature and weather play a huge part in each story, and I love how unique, though simple, the magic systems are. The world building remains a little simplistic as well, but I’ve come to appreciate that - it doesn’t feel heavy nor take focus away from the characters. The worlds of Griffin’s books also manage to highlight environmental problems of our world. I just wish we had witches to help solve them…

Bring Me Your Midnight is the most recent release and it fits well into the current book trend: dark romantasy. The book is absolutely gorgeous inside and out and the story, though quite predictable in terms of the plot, is addictive. Witches have been evicted to an island and they have limited their magic in order to gain the mainland’s acceptance - they have even made their home a tourist attraction. The main character Tana has a clear purpose in life: to marry the governor’s son and thus guarantee the safety of her coven. But it soon becomes clear that there’s much she doesn’t know about her history and desires.

This didn’t end up being a favorite of mine, mainly because the romance, which plays a central role, felt a bit too YA and angsty. I do love the way magic works and how the history of the coven is revealed. A solid 4/5 stars, but The Nature of Witches remains the best book about witches I’ve read.
