Oh Look! Another 2023 fantasy of a hidden-identity orphaned White Haired heroine with Powers that surpass everyone
No wonder readers say "Nothing is original"
well, that is not true
The correct term is "No one wants to THINK of something original"
⚜ rating: 2 🌟🌟
⚜Genre: High Fantasy
⚜Theme: Resistance/Oppression Fantasy (this is not a romance though it does have romantic elements)
⚜Targeted audience: Adult
⚜Characters: Diem (the others are side characters to further Diem's story)
⚜Representation: Non
⚜Pace: fast (The writing is not that impressive)
⚜TW: murder, child murder, violence
⚜ tropes: as I said, this is not a romance-Yet, but the supposed tropes are: Love triangles, friends to lovers, enemies to would-be lovers, hidden identity, chosen one,
⚜ POV: First person one-sided
⚜ spice 🌶🌶
⚜standalone: No, first in a trilogy
⚜Ending: cliffhanger
I have to admit that for someone who does not read fantasy of this theme, the story will be appealing and intriguing.
However, for a dedicated fantasy reader, this will read as repetitive and to be honest old.
Fill in the blanks with books with the same plot
A mother in hiding because she is protecting her child girl by telling her she belongs to humans rather than fae/witches/descendants/vampires ...The girl possesses great power but she doesn't know. She grows up to have white hair and dazzling eyes. She is an excellent fighter and everyone who meets her falls for her. She has feelings for her childhood friend but apparently will end up with the tall dark brooding prince she hates and thinks is her enemy. She will end up being the savior of her people. Oh, and there is a resistance that has no problem using violence to fight back and our heroine is in a dilemma, does she join the resistance that has no problem unaliving innocent persons of those who oppressed them, or does she end up part of the specie that are the oppressors?
Diem's character is so cliched that is an eye roll
she is the fiesty heroine who is a healer but also a fighter however she always makes questionable decisions because she is easily influenced by others.
Henry, the first love interest, of course, was written to be this annoying rebel who loves Diem but at the same time has misogynistic notions. We are to hate him and root for Luther, DUHHH!
The writing, world-building, and magic system are very simple making the story easy to follow.
in short, if you want an abridged fantasy to give you an ACOTAR feel, this is it
