Snow White, Blood Red by Ellen Datlow, Terri Windling
1.0
For many years, I have been attracted to the "fairy-tale-gone-bad" genre, or the fairy tale with a twist. This started with Sheri S. Tepper's Beauty, a fantasy novel that re-tells the classic Beauty and the Beast thread. It continued through a couple of other works (of little interest), the Roquelaure/Rice erotica (Beauty), and then Gregory Maguire. It seemed that Maguire should be the pinnacle of rewritten Disney tales-- but he wasn't. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister I found boring and predictable, with a bit of ludicrous thrown in.
So, despite my disappointments, I was thrilled to find Snow White, Blood Red, a collection of revised folklore Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. Having received this collection as a Christmas gift, I immediately delved into it... and was completely disappointed. Not only are these stories stilted and boring, without even the slightest attempt at creating a plot, they're not fairy tale recreations. There's no underlying theme or motif, no twist, nothing... just a bit of fantasy thrown in, which evidently makes it special. Ugh.
