The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr.

3.0

3.5 stars. It’s a compelling story and very original; I love the idea of the Guardians at the Gate. The kind of sad you feel reading this is a rock in your chest. You want to kill everyone even tangentially involved in slavery (including oneself: I have an English slaver ancestor from Bristol). The reason it lost a few points for me was that I really don’t like magic realism and there’s a lot of it. But that’s my failing and not the failing of the book.
