The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography by Sidney Poitier

5.0

I simply believe that there's a very organic, immeasurable consciousness of which we're a part. I believe that this consciousness is a force so powerful that I'm incapable of comprehending its power through the puny instrument of my human mind..

What a read! I was generally interested in hearing about Sidney Poitier's life given what I know about his acting career, but this autobiography was more than a laundry list of film roles. Poitier provided answers to questions I have and posed questions I thought I knew the answer to until he asked. This was book was like listening to someone talk on a front porch as the sun sets and your mind begins to wander into the possibilities of tomorrow. This autobiography is not a collection of fuzzy, feel-good moments nor is it over exaggerating the dooms of life. It's just Poitier's telling and the genuineness (down to the you knows?) shone through. There were parts of the book that were less-than-stellar, like the few times when Poitier got preachy, but I am still walking away feeling grateful I read it.
