Scattered Showers
by Rainbow Rowell
3.5 stars. I don’t think this books REALLY good stories help make up for the painfully mediocre ones. I just think like every story was like a carbon copy of the other and I didn’t really care about any of the characters enough for me to like the stories because I haven’t read the books their from you know? I will now be individually rating each short story.
Midnight- 3/5 The most basic out of all of them I think. Why do I care about these high schoolers New Years. It wasn’t until Rainbow started to describe the feeling of feeling out of place somewhere you’ve been going since you were a kid just because you were away for a couple months at college. Very relatable and that whole section was really good. But otherwise it was about a boy and girl who end up kissing at the end. Okay NEXT!
Kindred Spirits- 2.5/5 THE WAY THIS WAS THE MOST EMBARRASSINGGGGG SHORT STORY OUT OF YHE BUNCH. This girl camped to see the force awakens then was disappointed that no one else was camping. Like are u dumb on purpose. There was no reason to camp for a show you already have seats for. This is like camping for a seated venue. “I thought it was gonna be a party” GIRL ITS 2017. The movie was crap anyway so it’s a good thing she SLEPT THROUGH IT. Also these people kept hating on the prequels like stfu you don’t get them like I do. THE GIRL HADNT EVEN SEEEEENNNN THE PREQUELS BC OF HER DADDDD like stop. I didn’t like the MLI either. He was kinda just being like oh MAN being a nerd is NORMAL and i’m still a LOSER. ok maybe that’s because you have the personality of a reddit incel. Yeah this just made me hate star wars fans a little more. There were a couple cute parts but other than that it just made me cringe.
Winter Songs for Summer- 4/5 this one was actually really cute!! It was about people bonding over music and eventually falling in love and it had a cute title!!! like i’m sold that’s all it takes. This story set the bar tbh it was like short story romance was supposed to be. They were cutesy together. AND. The whole story took place in Schramm like that’s pretty cool bc like hey I know that place.
The Snow Ball- 2/5 This literally just felt like a filler story. Like it was just annoying. Teenagers who Don’t know How To Articulate Their Feelings. Like wow okay never heard that before. It was just a little like long. This could’ve been done in 2 pages I feel.
If the Fates Allow- 3/5 Average again. Like I didn’t hate it, but it was just a story about a character I didn’t know that the author expected me to know getting with her Grandpas Next door neighbor. I think it would’ve been a lot more enjoyable if I remembered anything about fan girl expect for the main characters names.
The Prince and the Troll- 3.5/5 Worldbulding was a little iffy for me. Why did they have phones. Why did they have Starbucks. I get that The Road was meant to be left like unknowable and ominous, but that didn’t answer any of my questions about anything else and it just made me frustrated. Also at this point I was just Tired of the m/f romance. Like I get it. But this is a Troll and you made her feminine and conventionally attractive Like I didn’t get It. It’s cowardice.
Mixed Messages- 3/5 I think this would’ve been a lot better if I 1. Read Attachments and 2. was a 50 year old going through Menopause. They were really well written and I felt the one characters pain and uncertainty, but this wasn’t a story written for me.
Snow for Christmas- 4.5 Though there were parts I didn’t REALLY agree with for the characters I just love Simon and Baz so very much. Like I would do anything for them. And This story just felt so Cozyyyyy like putting on your favorite sweater IDK. i just love this world and even though it has its problems and I hated 2/3s of the trilogy.
In Waiting- 4/5 This was a really cool concept and I reallllly liked it. I liked the idea of all the OCs i’ll ever think of just sitting around in my head fully capable of making conversations and talking to each other and that’s like so cool??? I loved how she wrote each of the characters and how some weren’t fully formed and others you could CLEARLY tell they were meant to be main characters just by how solid and present they were. Such a fun read.
