Mad Honey by Jennifer Finney Boylan, Jodi Picoult
4.0

i found this book to be supremely frustrating. it was a constant struggle to hold empathy for these characters, to keep an open mind about their respective contexts, to not let my frustration stop me from finishing the whole thing. but, honestly, these are exactly the reasons why this is a really important read.

this story is an invitation to practice overcoming the resistance to discomfort and unfamiliarity. it confronts your capacities to be compassionate and understanding. it left me with knowing what it feels like to open my heart to others despite not initially wanting to... or perhaps, even, not wanting to at all. generally speaking, this book commands the self to at least reevaluate their capacity to hold space for others.

i give this book 3.5 stars, for it is important to read but i did not feel particularly great by the end of it.
