“And I know it was the kind of ghost story you tell instead of the true horror, the kind you tell about places after they’re haunted, instead of the ones that explain how they got haunted in the first place.”

Victoria (aka V. E.) Schwab is an incredibly special author to tons of readers and for me the books of hers that resonate the most is her Cassidy Blake series. I loved both of her previous books set in Edinburgh and then Paris and this book set in New Orleans was extra special for me since it was set in a place very closely related to where I grew up and I was familiar with a lot of the legends, traditions, and stories mentioned in the book.

I thought Schwab did a particularly excellent job at evoking the feel and atmosphere of New Orleans in the summer and her philosophical takes on the various types of paranormal “magics” and cultural traditions around Death was very well handled.

I definitely hope that this isn’t Schwab’s last Cassidy Blake book!

“That’s what it means to be alive. Every day, whether you’re a regular person or an in-betweener. You run as long as you can, but Death always catches up… I’ve never met anyone who outran Death forever… So yes, Death will come for us again, one way or another. We can’t live in fear of it. That’s no way to live at all.”
