Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
4.0

I found this book to be a difficult read for different reasons. There were parts that were simply hard to read because of the cruelty and others that were hard to read because of the writing.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I felt it read like someone was telling me a narrative. That was both bad and good. There were times that it became a bit tedious to read but others that I greatly enjoyed the story being told that way. The story was interesting and a lot of the details helped the reader really feel like they were experiencing slavery with Northup.

I saw on here a few comments from people saying they felt the story was exaggerated and I have to say I disagree. To be perfectly honest I would agree with that he says at the end that he probably left out a great deal of the horrors he experienced/witnessed. I haven't seen the movie so I can't compare it to that but I would definitely recommend this book.
