Unprotected: A Memoir
by Billy Porter
I first knew of Billy Porter when he portrayed Pray Tell on one of the best shows ever, Pose. But he has been around way longer in the broadway and music scene. Billy Porter bares his soul in Unprotected. There are so many painful moments in his childhood, a lot of things that can be triggering for people that he talks about. He definitely was unprotected a lot of times and I wish someone had been there for him. I listened to this on audio and I'm glad I did because Billy's voice is a work of art. I loved hearing him talk about auditioning for roles and how he'd have to have his own back and fight for himself because no one else would do it. It's crazy how roles would say they wanted a flamboyant gay man and then they'd tell him he's too flamboyant and give the role to a straight guy! He talks about living through the AIDs crisis and it reminded me of his scenes on Pose which I I know weren't easy to film for him. I appreciate him baring all. Billy is such an inspiration that even if you've been through hell keep going, it gets better.
