I really wanted to love this one because the premise was intriguing with the indigenous Taíno mythology and a Puerto Rico inspired world. It definitely had its stronger aspects, such as the magic surrounding Carnaval, the mystery of finding the lost brother, and the important messages about colonialism. But outside of that, it kind of fell flat. The last 30-40% of the book seemed to lose its magic, and the writing itself was sometimes hard to follow.
I listened to the audiobook and while I liked the narrator, the volume was definitely off at times and it would get really quiet which really bothered me.
Thank you to Mira and Harlequin Audio for an ARC & ALC in exchange for my honest review!
