We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

5.0

“I would have to find something else to bury here and I wished it could be Charles.”

This book is not only bizarre, but also surprisingly funny at times. I loved Connie and Uncle Julian, but most of all Merricat! I loved how she would just break mirrors in their house and think awful thoughts as if she’s unhinged. But I like to think she actually has every right to do what she does especially since some entitled fuck just decided to intrude on their lives.

Also, the way Shirley Jackson portrayed class status and contempt in the novel is commendable. So far I’ve read two books written by her (both were disturbing; just *chef’s kiss*) and I could say that she’s now one of my favorite authors.
