Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery
2.0

2021 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge-a book by an author with the same zodiac sign.

First of all, before I go off on a rant, I want to say that I love Anne Shirley. She's just so Anne Shirley. There's no other way to describe her.

But, I didn't love this book.

1. It seems to be just a bunch of incidents where she meets someone who hates her, they come to love her and she solves all their problems with some zany plot. Or they love her immediately. Either way.

2. She's so superficially judgmental in this book. Complaining about the way people dress. About their looks. She spends a whole church service "improving everyone's looks" in her mind. Ugh. But, I still love her. Nobody's perfect.

3. Why did LM Montgomery even create the character of Dora if she was just going to disdain her for being a nice, polite, well-behaved child. Oh, the horrors. Who could want that?

Which brings me to number 4. Anne goes to Green Gables every Christmas and summer and a few weekends. We only go with her once. But, the visit is all about Katherine. Dora doesn't even get a line (her cat does get to purr, though), they go to visit Diana and her new baby and Diana doesn't get any lines.

5. A good deal of the book is letters written to Gilbert. Yet we don't see a single letter written back (I'm not syaing he didn't write, I'm saying we didn't see them), and he also doesn't have any real mention during the Green Gables visit. The only reason we even know he was there was because he gave a gift to Katherine and took them to see Diana.

If they had stayed out of Green Gables altogether I wouldn't have minded the lack of our friends from other books. But, come on, give me something in those two or three chapters.
