Deacon King Kong by James McBride
4.0

The story follows an older man, known as Sportcoat, who shoots a young drug dealer - and doesn't remember it because he was drunk. But the young drug dealer was once his Sunday school pupil & star of the baseball team he coached.
The entire community is intertwined in ways such as this, James McBride's manner of revealing these characters & relationships is so artful & natural. You feel as though you're being introduced to this community. Things are revealed in the course of time.
And his writing is just beautiful & colorful & varied. This is the first of his works that I've read, and I'll admit I was struggling at the beginning when everything felt disconnected & there were so many characters being introduced, but by mid way through, I felt like I almost knew these people & their community. By the end, I loved them.
He writes people with flaws, but unapologetically, so they feel genuine.
Near the end is a small time jump, which isn't employed earlier so initially felt a little like rushing, but I am content with the way he wrapped this story up.
