The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
5.0

(I went overboard and read the entire book even though my school hasn't finished it.)

Update: I do not believe in Anti-Semitism and will always be against it. That is not why I gave the play five stars. Ignoring the Anti-Semitism, I think this play deserves five stars because of its execution, memorable lines, and characters.

Overall, awesome! It's one of those plays where you have to read a tad bit slower to let the meaning sink in. I love Shakespeare's similes and comparisons, and his soliloquys.
There's a particular line that in the court scene that I like. I won't tell you what it is, but it really did make me laugh (sorry, I know that scene is grave. I know Shakespeare intended it to happen).
Shakespeare's skill of adding humour even in the most solemn of scenes is ingenious. There's no surprise why he's considered one of the greatest writers in the world.
I pity Shylock, though, although he's depicted as cruel (he is in many ways). Anti-Semitism does tend to take its toll on victims.
Anyway, this play inspired me to write a play of my own back in August. And any book that does that is an instant hit with me.
Okay, enough praising. But if you don't believe Shakespeare's plays have strong female leads, GO READ THIS PLAY. I mean, seriously. You will not regret it.
