The Land of Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel

1.0

This would have to be one of the worst books I have ever read. If you are reading this series out of loyalty, like me, don’t even bother with this one. Seriously. It’s 700+ pages of torture. The most disappointing conclusion to a book series I’ve ever read.

Although Clan of the Cave Bear wasn’t particularly well written, the story line was engaging and the characters were interesting and as a reader you became invested in them. The series starts to decline when Jondalar comes into it, because let’s be honest, he is just the actual worst.

This book is mind numbingly boring, with the most repetitive dialogue and descriptions. How many times do we need to read The Mother’s Song?? How many times are characters (that we have known for several books) introduced and described with the exact same adjectives every, single, time. The paragraphs of actual scientific research are so jarring when juxtaposed with the awful soap opera writing.

The major flaw of this series has always been Auel imposing modern days ideals and actions onto ice-age people. Ideas about love, sex, monogamy, jealously. It’s been excruciating to read sometimes but more so in this book where Ayla and Jondalar act in the most ridiculous way - their actions towards the end of the book are embarrassing and cringe.

And the “big reveal”.... sigh. Are we going to blame Ayla for the patriarchy??
