I loved this book! It's fast-paced, violent, full of nail-biting suspense and gut-wrenching heartbreak. It has the BEST DOG. Oh, Manchee! How I love you! "Good poo, Todd." Isn't that exactly what dogs are probably thinking?!

Todd is the youngest boy in a town full of men on New World...a planet colonized by people from, I assume, a future and ruined Earth. These folks eschewed technology and yearned for the simple life of farming. In this town, men's thoughts are broadcast for anyone to hear. This "Noise" is sometimes rendered with scribbled, messy writing, and described with color and texture so that you too can "hear" it. The thoughts of animals are also broadcast, from crickets, "Sex." to birds, "Where is my safety?" to dogs, "Poo."

The non-stop action follows Todd and his companions as they run to escape a mad man and an army.

My only quibble is the big secret about what happens to a boy when he becomes a man. It's an awful thing but, honestly, not as awful as I thought it would be. I kept forgetting that this is an YA novel and I had dark and nasty suspicions. I don't think it would have hurt the story to reveal it earlier and save the reader (me) some icky thoughts.
