Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim
4.0
I feel like I'm describing a lot of books this way lately, but this was so much fun! Amaya and Cayo were both fascinating to read about, and the dramatic irony built such great tension. I liked that the romance was rather back-seat in the narrative, which is something I always worry about when doing this kind of gender-bent retelling. Betrayal and revenge are such strong themes throughout this, and I loved every twist and turn as a new betrayal was revealed. For some people, this will likely be a little bit light on world-building, but I'm not someone who needs detailed descriptions of the world. A little bit more info about the wider context of the area would have been nice, but the ending read like that component would be blown up in book 2 and made a much larger focus of the narrative. The diversity of race, gender and sexuality in this book was done naturally and seamlessly in my opinion, and it was great to see. I'm definitely looking forward to reading book 2!
