The Book of Form and Emptiness
by Ruth Ozeki
Hmmmm. I *loved* A Tale for the Time Being, and I wonder if my love for that book made me assume I'd adore this one. There's so much to like in this book, and I do recommend it. But I found some parts overly twee, and the story could have been much tighter. I did, though, love the humor in taking Marie Kondo to a level where objects do have voices. Inspired by Ozeki and this book, I cleaned out my basement in an almost-ruthless way, and every time I walk in there, I have that Kondo feeling.
I liked the characters a lot--their story is tragic, and their ways of dealing with grief are understandable and therefore heartbreaking. However, did I love this book? I'm going to try My Year of Meats, though, because Ozeki is such a brilliant writer.
