Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout
4.0

Obsession is set in Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux world, the same place where Katy and Daemon live. But instead of Luxen, this book features the other side of the alien population. Arum.

Serena is a human who doesn’t know anything about the aliens living all around her. That is until her best friend Mel sees a Luxen take his true form. Mel tells Serena all about what she saw and heard, and of course Serena, who is a school guidance counselor, thinks Mel needs to get her head checked out. That is until Mel is killed for the information she discovered, and Serena sees it all happen. Now Serena is being targeted for her knowledge. This is where Hunter comes into the picture. He is an Arum working for the DOD (Department of Defense), who is reluctantly tasked with keeping Serena safe. Of course, sparks fly – more than just the Luxen kind - and the two fall for each other. As usual, Armentrout is excellent at writing alpha males and the women who challenge them, building tension and creating chemistry between her characters. Serena and Hunter are a great pair.

Obsession is an ADULT Paranormal Romance, which means more language, steam and violence. It can be read separately from the Lux series. However, chronologically it takes place after the events in Opal (during Origin), and I really enjoyed it as a compliment to Katy and Daemon’s books. We even glimpse a few overlapping characters, although they are not major players in this story.

I absolutely love when an author is able to present another viewpoint that changes my perspective and makes me rethink the good guys vs. the bad guys. Following an Arum – the enemies of the Luxen – gave me a different and broader look at this world. Obsession also provides more insight into what is happening in the government and larger Luxen communities, all information that I imagine will come into play later in the Lux series. Obsession definitely made me anxious to get back to Katy and Daemon!

Although I’m not certain whether Obsession was published as a standalone, Hunter has 2 identical brothers (yes, hot triplets!) who are currently single, and I wouldn’t mind following them around for a while. Also, though this is a complete story, a lot of big things are happening in this world, which have yet to be solved. I cannot wait to see where Armentrout goes next.
