This Splintered Silence
by Kayla Olson
This sci-fi novel is set on a space station, where a group of teens have to step up and take control of… well, everything, after all the adults (or, more specifically, everyone who was born on Earth, rather than on the space station) succumbed to a deadly disease. Add to that already tricky situation a potential mutation in the virus, or something more sinister, when more deaths start occurring, and the tension in this friend group starts to reach critical levels. I very much enjoyed this one, it reminded me a lot of the Illuminae Files. There were some nice short vignettes of introspection in between longer chapters of action and suspense, where our main character takes a moment to muse about her mother, memories, and the complicated emotions that accompany her new situation. I could, once again, have done without the romance, but at least it didn’t impact the plot too much.
