The Gospel of Loki
by Joanne M. Harris
Loki’s narration of his time at Asgard was definitely entertaining, his sarcasm and biting honesty was engaging and enjoyable. However I felt that much of the book was very bitty, presumably due to the nature of mythology, and it therefore felt we were lurching from anecdote to anecdote rather than having one continuous story.
Additionally, sometimes the characters fell slightly flat. While Loki did often read as a complex character trying to balance his nature, motivations and relationships, there were other times he came across as repetitive and one-note. Similarly, none of the other gods had particularly distinguishing personalities and I feel that in some of the stories you could have swapped the characters round with absolutely no discernible difference to the plot.
