Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

5.0

How does one describe such a phenomenal work that is the novel Les Misérables? It’s a book I want to put in people’s hands and say “Read it!” I know it’s long. Really long. It is an investment of time. But it is well worth it.

Les Misérables is a story about injustices. About poverty and unfairness and cruelty. It is also about heroism, forgiveness, love, and mercy. It will break your heart more than once; but redemption and hope can be found within the pages of the book too. The story slowly builds and builds until it reaches a crescendo, much like a musical masterpiece does. Then once it hits that crescendo, the novel slowly slides to a quiet but powerful finish.

Hugo included what many refer to as digressions in this book. While it’s true one can enjoy the story without reading some of those digressions, I try to encourage people to give them a go and not skip over them. Because they really do connect with the storyline. They add background. They add context. They help you understand just that much more about aspects in the story. I can’t say it enough….This novel is beautifully and brilliantly written. It will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
