I think there are a lot of ideas about stolen youth and intimacy with death here, particularly as they relate to the AIDS epidemic, but they're introduced in such an upsetting way I'm not sure I can make heads or tails of it, at least for a while. Maybe that's a testament to it? It's certainly a subversion of some prevailing ideas about queer victimhood, and the narrative style is wielded in effective and interesting ways. At the same time, parts of it feel like a speedrun to see how much fucked-up stuff can be put into one page. It made me feel really ill. Anyway, I think I'm gonna read more Dennis Cooper.
