mel4mil 's review for:
Mrs. Lincoln's Sisters
by Jennifer Chiaverini
I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway, in exchange for my honest opinion.
My excitement to read this book quickly gave way to boredom, as it felt more like a historical documentation than a novel. There were small pieces of dialogue throughout, but most text was a "she did this...than this happened" type of read. The characters just felt distant and impersonal. The pace of the book and my interest did increase toward the middle when Abe Lincoln was introduced. I found the author's descriptions of Abe and his endeavor's much more interesting and personable than the Todd sisters. The last half of the book was much more enjoyable to read, although I found the interwoven chapters of Mary's unstable interactions tedious after a certain point. I really felt like this could have been a great book, but it relied too heavily on the details instead of the narrative.
